Every aspect of creating a book is important. Even the name can me the difference between a reader deciding to purchase your book or passing it over. When it comes to selecting a title, you want something catchy, unique, and easy to remember. When I am working on my stories, one of the first things I do is determine the basic storyline. This includes creating the cover and writing the blurb. Once I have the basic idea of what the story is going to be about, I work on creating a title. I believe in every aspect of my books connecting to create an overall idea of what the book is about. My titles are often even used within the story itself. My guidelines for creating a title:
As you can see in mine and S.E. Isaac's series "Captured Hearts," we used two words connected by an ampersand (&). The titles are a play on classic story titles such as "Pride and Prejudice." Plus, the words connect somehow with the storyline. For instance, a flock of flamingos -- which is one of the types of shifters in the book -- is called a Flamboyance and the other shifter type is a lion which is found in a pride. In the story we also use the other meanings of "Pride" and "Flamboyance" to create the personalities of the two main characters.
In general, we play around with the titles we select until they feel right. The original working title of a story often changes by the time it is published. However, having a title allows me to focus on what I plan to write and stick to the storyline I've chosen.
