As an author, I hear a lot about Kindle Unlimited. There are a lot of readers who only read a book if they can grab it on KU. Sadly, as an author, there is a lot of give and take when making the decision to list in KU. Mainly because you have to be exclusive to Amazon while it's listed on KU. In the past, I always worried about alienating some of my readers who used the other vendors, so I published wide. However, the one thing I've discovered is that to stay viable you have to be willing to change and adjust. So, all of my solo offered books are now available exclusively on Amazon. You can purchase any of my stories in ebook or print.

Hardest Part About Writing a Story...For me, the worst part about writing a story, with the goal of publishing, is the promotion part of the process. For someone like me, promoting my own work is extremely stressful. Between the time it takes, the cost, and the fact that social media -- which is the easiest way to promote -- is constantly changing, what was effective a week ago won't necessarily work now. Writing is a process that can be different for each person. I am a creative, descriptive, and perfectionistic type of personality. I come up with ideas on a daily basis. However, to actually work on my word count, I have to be in a certain frame of mind. Which brings me to the second most difficult part of writing -- fighting my own demons. Between my mental and physical health, dealing with the world at large, and dealing with a lack of confidence in my own abilities I often find myself dealing with writers block. My critique partner is a tremendous help in pushing me and bolstering me so that I continue working on what I love to do... telling amazing romance stories. Time and Effort of Writing...If you are someone thinking of becoming an author (as a hobby or as a profession), an important fact to remember is that each person has to find their own process. What works for one, doesn't necessarily work for others. Some authors are diehard planners and others are pantsers. I tend to fall somewhere in the middle. Some authors can write several thousand words in a matter of an hour while others might take all day to get a few hundred. Personally, I have to be in a certain frame of mind. If my flow is interrupted, its as if I have to start all over at the beginning. A few authors I know can work on several stories at once, while some can only focus on one at a time. What this means is that each author will finish their story in their own time. While some release anywhere from a weekly to a monthly basis, others may only be able to finish one release a year. In some cases, an author may need several years to work through their novel. Seems like I'm talking in circles...It might seem like I'm blowing smoke or talking in circles but what it comes down to is finding your own process and working within your own boundaries. Pressuring yourself or allowing others to pressure you will only harm the story you share to the world. So, allow yourself to test the waters and find what works for you.
As for me, I struggle on a daily basis with my motivation and finding that headspace I need to write. However, when I find it, I find writing extremely freeing. The words flow and I enjoy what I do. |
